Suite "alla montagna"

by Ganesh Del Vescovo (2003)
A short comment by the author

Campo Imperatore

I wrote Suite "alla montagna"(Suite "to the mountain"), in 2003 in memory of a mountain excursion made with the Yamashita family group. We went all the way up to Campo Imperatore, a plain that stretches out as far as the eye can see on the top of the Appenine Mountains, in my native land − the Abruzzo, in central Italy. A magical, mysterious place with a soft, rolling landscape that leads to silence − a silence broken only by the overwhelming joy of the Yamashita children! The planes and hills in succession look like a piece ripped off the moon and give a strange, dazed feeling of wanting to lose one’s self. A deep inner sensation leads the mind to a mood of reflection and contemplation. At the end of the trip one perceives the powerful contact made with the divinity that animates the mountain: to it, to the Yamashita family, to their, to our Music, this piece is dedicated.

Suite "alla montagna" is written in five parts and each part expresses a different mood:

Preludio-Prelude: As the title suggests, this is a kind of anticipation to something. It has a flowing nature, but is not too fast.
Mistero-Mystery: This attitude is typical in my music: it looks within and conveys a mood of inner reflection.
Quasi una danza - Nearly a Dance: This recalls a dance movement, which develops between two moods: one rhythmic the other staccato.
Incanto-Enchantment: This gives the sensation of the enchantment one feels standing before something one has never seen before: a feeling of wonder.
Come una fantasia: Like a Fanasy: The title tells all! It follows one’s fantasy and imagination

When writing my music I generally tend not to write much in regard to expression and colour. I prefer to indicate that which reveals the spirit and the mood, leaving the expression and colour to the sensitivity and imagination of the performer.
