Music for a Paramahamsa

Ganesh Del Vescovo is one of the most interesting artists on the Italian music scene. He has greatly studied and cultivated Indian music and, during the years, has undertaken a very personal quest on the guitar which brought him to fathom some totally new aspects of the instrument. This interesting Dvd, produced by Guitar Media Collection of Florence, shows Ganesh Del Vescovo as he plays some of the compositions he has written for the traditional classical guitar as well as for other “hybrid” instuments of his own devising: the chikari guitar (a guitar which has the addition of two drone strings which can be fixed at varying levels) and the sarod guitar (made by adding a fret board resembling that of the sarod -a traditional Indian string instrument - to the fret board of the guitar). The pieces presented on the Dvd are immersed in meditative atmospheres and, with a free reinterpretation of the aesthetics of this ancient musical universe, capture the most spiritual and expressive aspects of India. Del Vescovo himself appears playing the tablas (a percussion instrument of the Indian tradition) alongside the guitarist Giacomo Mazzoni and then turns to play the sarod in a long fantasy on an Indian raga. All this is capped by an interesting interview in which Del Vescovo talks about his experience in music and also about the instruments he plays. Beautiful and original music and equally beautiful and inspired interpretations: highly recommended!(Piero Viti)
